Report – West Ham Veteran star now wants to leave the London Stadium as Julen Lopetegui eyes major changes at the club

West Ham are planning a major overhaul of their defensive line-up in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from The Times (21 June), Julen Lopetegui aims to sign three new defenders after the Hammers conceded 74 goals in the 2023-24 season.

Angelo Ogbonna has been released following the expiry of his contract. Kurt Zouma is available for sale as he struggles to maintain match fitness, while Nayef Aguerd is keen to leave the club this summer.

The 28-year-old Aguerd attracted interest from Saudi Arabia last summer. Although West Ham have not yet received any offers, he is still expected to depart.

The club has already agreed on a £25.5 million deal to sign Luis Guilherme, and they hope to add four more players before the start of pre-season.

Major changes at the back needed:

David Moyes has done commendable work at West Ham, but Lopetegui recognises the need for substantial surgery, particularly in defence.

In fact, he has not inherited a very solid squad. West Ham may need new full-backs, another striker, an attacking midfielder, a back-up goalkeeper, and multiple central defenders.

The Hammers have agreed on a deal to sign Wes Foderingham on a free transfer, with his medical set to be completed within the next week.

Aguerd joined the club on a big-money deal from French club Rennes in 2022. He spent much of his time in the treatment room but ended the season strongly, managing two goals in 30 games.

Everyone expected him to step up last season, but he has been underwhelming, managing only 28 appearances. West Ham will likely not hesitate to offload him if they receive a good offer from the Saudi Pro League clubs.

Lopetegui’s task is clear: rebuild the defence to avoid another season of defensive frailty. The incoming transfers and potential departures will shape West Ham’s prospects for the upcoming season.
