Jack Grealish recovers from leg injury but Aston Villa captain suffers new setback and will miss Newcastle clash due to illness

Jack Grealish will miss his fifth straight Aston Villa match as he was ruled out of their clash with Newcastle on Friday.

The England international has missed their last four games with a leg injury, but that is not what is keeping him out of the side.

Grealish is set to miss his fifth straight Aston Villa game

Grealish has recovered from that knock and now it is illness that is keeping him from featuring.

“Jack has been making really good progress at we are happy at where he’s at but, unfortunately, he won’t make it,” said Villa manager Dean Smith.

“He has been ill this week so he’s been off for a couple of days as well, but we’re hopeful for the Tottenham game now, that’s for sure.

“Jack is still in and around the training ground. He takes part in the meetings. He’s got a voice and an opinion, which is good.”

Villa hope Grealish will be back to face Tottenham

There was some positive news on injuries for Smith, though, as Anwar El Ghazi will be fit to travel after missing the goalless draw with Wolves with a bruised toe while Matty Cash will also be back in contention after missing the last four games with a hamstring injury.

Villa have picked up just four points in Jack Grealish’s absence and will be desperate to get him back as he’s provided six goals and 10 assists so far this season.

They are down in ninth place in the Premier League on 40 points but have games in hand over their rivals.
